System integration and coupled effects of an OWT/WEC device

This paper uses a fully nonlinear model to comprehensively explore the coupled effects caused by system integration between an offshore wind turbine and heaving buoy wave energy converter. Parameters of study include pitch motion turbine, tension on mooring line, contact pressure these two devices, absorbed power take-off (PTO) system. Results demonstrated that stabilises/reduces when its metacentric height is positive. A with negative will increase amplitude which undesirable. The relative vertical spar could buffer their maximum pressure. Coulomb PTO offer higher peak output WEC than linear PTO. relationship quantified inform design. wind/wave device evaluated at representative site suitable conditions off US West Coast. does significantly reduce least 60%/50% for modelled average/max increased production (14%/80%).
